Chew Magna has a thriving close-knit community, shown through the large variety of clubs and societies that can be found in the village.
Chew Magna, voted ‘The Best Village in Britain’, regularly wins awards for the areas outstanding beauty and has been described as the ‘greenest parish in England’. Situated close to the edge of the Mendip Hills, you’ll feel close to nature whilst walking the ancient cobbled streets of this village. There are many fascinating historical buildings to be explored, which in medieval times took an important role in the wool trade for which the village is famous.
With a population of only 1,200 residents, ranging from infants to retirees in their nineties, Chew Magna has a thriving close-knit community, shown through the large variety of clubs and societies that can be found in the village from the monthly book club to the exciting motoring society.
To the south of the village you can find the protected Chew Valley Lake, an important site for wildlife in the area as well as a place for recreation such as kayaking and parasailing. After a thrilling day on the lake you can stop off at the Salt & Malt, a café found nearby where you can enjoy a hot drink and afternoon tea.
The village has pledged to move towards a zero-waste status, ensuring that the surrounding hills and valleys remains wild and healthy for years to come. Along with environmental protection being a top priority for this beautiful town, the local council puts an emphasis on supporting local businesses through the weekly farmers markets and trade shows, allowing for the population to consume more sustainably.
